I brought it from a charity shop complete with embarrassing case, user manual and a 22-70 lens. It looks like this:
Which I borrowed from that website, thanks Bojidar Dimitrov.
When I brought it, it didn’t switch on, so I replaced the CR2 batteries and it came to life! I put a role of film through it and it worked fine, I was quite happy with it. I took this photo with it:
The first roll of film I put through it was great, then I put another film through it whilst en route to Stratford, and that’s when the problems started… For some reason, I’m not quite sure what, but the shutter seems to stick and the mirrors make a really weird whurring noise…
I’ve took the lens off and fiddled around it looks as if when the mirror snaps upwards to expose the film, it has trouble returning to its original position, also there’s a problem with the shutter, sometimes it jams shut and takes forever to open again, sometimes it opens but only partially. Sometimes the mirror doesn’t move at all, it just stays stuck upwards. Useless.
Not being an expert or a camera technician, i’m not sure what exactly was wrong, but I took it apart anyway.
One thing I learnt last night, is that when a camera is put together, the workman really has the intention of making sure it NEVER CAN BE TAKEN APART again. EVER. It took me three hours to get the bottom and front casing off to expose the screws holding the mirror box in place. My plan was to take the mirror box out and see if I could get to the gears or the motor at the back, maybe they had ceased up or something. But it was not to be. I couldn’t even budge the screws in the mirror box, my little set of screwdrivers just took all the black coating of the screwhead and made it a shiny copper colour again. So gutted, defeated and suffering from a fractured (almost) wrist, I put it back together again.
I’m a bit disappointed because it’s a nice camera and the quick autofocus and wide range of lens / lens attachments is really appealing.
Thinking of maybe selling it ‘Spares and Repairs’ and then buying a new body. Do you want it? Let me know somehow…
I really like old cameras and even though this one isn’t old I think I could have had a lot of fun with it. I’ve read that MZ-10’s are supposed to be very reliable so I’m not sure what’s wrong, I might change the batteries and see if that makes a difference but I doubt it…
